Why Folding Beds Are Great For Saving Space

No matter what type of house you have, or how big it is, beds are always an essential element that must be considered with time and care. These days, new-build urban houses are getting smaller, and many people are turning to specialist furniture companies to utilize the interior space as best they can. You might want a huge king size bed, but if it stands out like a sore thumb in a room, then you’re going to have to come up with something a little more practical.

From folding chairs and desks to pull-out book shelves, there really are some quite inventive ways to maximize the space in your home. Recently, folding beds have been added to this list, as more home owners are looking to get the most out of their spare bedrooms. Let’s take a look at why folding beds have always remained so popular.

From Concept to Realization

The concept of folding beds has been around for many years, however it was only during the last quarter of the 19th century that they really sprung to life. Not only were all home furniture manufacturers making them, but they were also experimenting with a number of different designs.

For example, 1849 saw the development of the ‘California Bed’, a piece of furniture that was light weight, suitable for transport and could easily sleep two whilst also able to become a table or sofa. These days, it’s hard to find a folding bed with that amount of extras, but you can why the market expanded so quickly.

In the 1987, development shifted from conversion to practicality, with companies realizing that folding beds only needed to do what people expected them to – a great nights’ sleep. These new versions of folding beds came with improved fire-resistant mattresses, as well as a new lock mechanism that removed the need for a safety catch to close.

Folding Beds Today

Towards the beginning of the 19th century, the folding bed market had declined so dramatically that companies only manufactured the furniture upon special request. Presently however, they’ve experienced a boom in orders, and manufacturers have once again had to survey the market demands and come up with new designs.

There are a number of advantages that folding beds offer rooms with little or no furniture flexibility. Firstly, they’re ideal for sleeping guests, whether its friends staying for a weekend or slumber parties for your children. From wardrobes to cupboards, and even under other beds, there’s always a space for folding beds, and they’re becoming even more practical as modern developments get smaller.

Instead of forking out the money for an extension or a guest room loft conversion, folding beds allow you the comfort and space for those unexpected visitors. Furthermore, the wardrobes that house these folding beds are become more bespoke too. In Some cases, you’re actually paying more for the design of the wardrobe instead of the bed itself. No matter how you perceive folding beds, it’s clear to see that they’re a great addition to a room with little or no free space.
